Let the Word Dwell

#37 I John 4:4

He Who Is in You is Greater

One of the goals of my 40 Memory Verse Challenge is to lay out our theology.  I believe that theology is important.  There is one bit of our theology I have not covered.  As we are getting close to the end of our 40, I thought it important to cover as many subjects as I could.  This morning we discuss Satan.  It is Halloween Weekend… so it kind of fits today.   Here is…

15 things you should know about Satan

We are going to go through these 15 things quickly.  I am not going to take the time to read all the scriptures.  There are handouts on the stands.  I am going to give you the reader’s digest version.   Let me say up front that some of these 15 things are not as certain as I would like them to be.  The Bible does not reveal as much about Satan as I would like.   Maybe, that’s on purpose.  We should not think too much about Satan.  There is a small percent that all of these doctrines are exactly right.  But, I think, as a whole this is what the Bible teaches about Satan.

Number 1 – Satan does not carry a pitch fork

All these images of Satan are false advertising.  Satan wants you to think he is a joke; a fairy tale; something to dress up on Halloween.  He wants us not to take him seriously.  It is odd that sports mascots are named after Satan.., Red Devils, Blue Devils, Sun Devils, Dust Devils and New Jersey Devils.  Then there are Blue Demons, Demon Deacons and lots of others.  Why?  False advertisement.

ESV 2 Corinthians 11:14  And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

Satan does not carry a pitchfork.   He is deceptive.

Number 2 – Satan is a fallen angel

Here is one of the doctrines that is not 100%.  But it appears that Satan was created as an angel by God.   And that Satan was thrown out of heaven to earth.  Ezekiel 28:11-19, Isaiah 14:12-17, John 8:44, and 1 Timothy 3:6 speak to this but the clearest is…

ESV Luke 10:17-18 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!"  And he said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

Jesus saw Satan fall from heaven… it appears Satan was an angel who rebelled against God and lost.

Number 3 – Satan was supposed to guard the Garden

This one is even a bit more uncertain. But Ezekiel 28 seems to be talking about an angel of Eden.

ESV Ezekiel 28:13-14 You were in Eden, the garden of God…  14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.

It may have been that Satan was supposed to watch over Adam and Eve.  But, instead seduced them!  This one only has a 21% chance of being right… but what we do know is…

Number 4 – Satan deceived Adam and Eve

ESV 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning…

Adam and Eve were given authority to care for the garden.  They were given authority to rule over the earth.  All the animals and plants and everything were placed under their supervision.  But when Satan caused them to sin, he took over the earth.  Satan wanted the authority of earth to be worshipped as a god.  When we sinned, Satan became the god of this world.

Number 5 – Fallen angels became demons

There, evidently, were angels who joined in Satan’s deception/rebellion.  They were cast out and they became the demons of the world.

ESV 2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;

ESV Jude 1:6  And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.

These other fallen angels now serve Satan as his minions; his demons.

Number 6 – Demons became false gods

There appears to be the powers behind idol worship.  The fallen angel,  who are demons are the power behind false gods. These demons have deceived humans and have created false religions.

ESV Deuteronomy 32:17 They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never known, to new gods that had come recently, whom your fathers had never dreaded.

ESV Psalm 106:37 They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons;

ESV 1 Corinthians 10:19-20 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?  No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.

ESV Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

ESV Revelation 9:20  The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk,

The false religions of the world are backed by the power of demons.

Number 7 – Satan rules the earth

From the time of Adam and Eve’s sin, Satan has ruled the world.  His influence has caused all to sin.

ESV 2 Corinthians 4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

ESV Ephesians 2:2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-

From the time of the fall until Jesus, Satan ruled this world.  Until…

Number 8 – Jesus began to reclaim the authority

During the life of Jesus on earth, Jesus began to take back what was supposed to be ours from the beginning.

ESV Mark 1:27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him."

ESV Matthew 9:6-7 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"- he then said to the paralytic- "Rise, pick up your bed and go home."  And he rose and went home.

ESV Matthew 10:1 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.

Jesus began the invasion into enemy territory with his authority over Satan and his minions.

Number 9 – Jesus defeated Satan

Through his perfect/sinless life and death on the cross and resurrection and ascension Jesus reclaimed Satan’s stolen authority.

ESV John 17:1-2 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh.”

ESV Hebrews 2:14-15 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,  and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

ESV 1 John 3:8 The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

ESV Ephesians 1:19-23 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.  And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Satan was defeated; fully.  Jesus reclaimed all authority.  As Jesus sat down on the throne beside God, as human, he defeated Satan.  But Satan has been left for a time.

Number 10 - Satan still has power, today

Satan has ability to tempt in several ways…

--Suffering…

ESV 1 Peter 5:8-9 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

--Hindrance… things just don’t work well.

ESV 1 Thessalonians 2:18 because we wanted to come to you- I, Paul, again and again- but Satan hindered us.

--Filling… when we allow a place for him

ESV John 13:27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."

ESV Acts 5:3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?

ESV Ephesians 4:26-27 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.

--False wonders… false religions, false power… false people under his control

ESV 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10  The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,  and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

--Lust

1 John 2:16  For all that is in the world- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions- is not from the Father but is from the world.

--The chaos of the world is evidence of Satan.  Hardly, do things work out right.  Pain, suffering, catastrophe, heartache, lust, clashes… all come from Satan’s instigations.

Number 11 - Satan must have permission

From the story of Job it seems Satan is limited in what he can do.

ESV Luke 22:31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat,

ESV 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Satan does not unlimited power.  Satan is not omniscient, or omnipotent, nor omnipresent.  Satan is not God. There are controls on him

Which leads us to the point of this sermon…

Number 12 – Jesus gives us authority over Satan

From the throne of heaven Jesus sent his Spirit to dwell in all flesh to advance the kingdom.  We have the authority to march to the gates of hell to reclaim the earth!

ESV Matthew 28:18-19 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

ESV James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

ESV Romans 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

This brings us to #37 of the Memory Verse Challenge

#37 1 John 4:4b For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Tree List – cheating dice… dirty dice

You need to memorize this short verse.

--In times of suffering, if you could just say…

--In times of hindrance…

--In times of temptation…

--In times of fear…

--In times when death is near…

We must know that the Spirit within us is more powerful than anything Satan can do!

Number 13 – There is protection in the body

Within the body of the church there is protection.

#36 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

“Us” is significant.  We have protection from Satan as us!

#24 Ephesians 6:24 Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.

The power of love drives out Satan and gives us power over all temptation!

Number 14 – The earth will be redeemed from Satan

#16 Romans 8:19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

ESV 1 Corinthians 15:24-26  Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.  The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

When the sons are revealed and the earth is reborn, Satan, death and all other enemies will be stopped.  We will dwell on the earth in peace!

Number 15 – The end of Satan is destruction

ESV Revelation 20:10 The devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Satan’s ultimate destiny is the lake!

=======

These are the 15 things you should know about Satan.  Satan is not a joke.  Satan is not something to be teased about or ignored.  Satan is real.  Even though he was defeated by Jesus, he still rules until the kingdom comes. Then he will be destroyed.  In the meantime we must repeat over and over again…

#37 1 John 4:4b For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
