Let the Word Dwell

#40 Revelation 21:3

God With us

This morning we are going to do two things.  We are going to honor Doyle Rottmayer and work on our eschatology.

--Doyle was a charter member of this congregation.  He was here for the entire duration of this congregation…. From the 50’s until September 13th of this year, Doyle was with this congregation.  We felt we should honor his faithfulness to this congregation. 60+ years of faithfulness!  He was a member here as long as I have been alive!

--We also want to do some Eschatology. Eschatology is… the study of the last things.  Eschatology is what happens next.  Eschatology is what happens when Jesus wraps this time up and moves us to the next.

I am going to do what Paul did in 1 Thessalonians.  Evidently, some member of the congregation had died in Thessalonica.  They weren’t expecting this.  Jesus was supposed to come.  Christians weren’t supposed to die. What happened to the guy who died?

ESV 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.   For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.  For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.  For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.  Therefore encourage one another with these words.

That is what we want to do this morning.  We want to encourage you about what has happened to Doyle.

So, we have a dual purpose this morning; let’s remember Doyle and attempt to figure out what has happened to him.  Let’s do the eschatology first.  Then, we are going to hear from a fellow elder of Doyle, some grandkids and Doyle’s Son-in-Law.

But first some eschatology… What happened to Doyle?

In our 40 Memory Verse challenge we have already studied 4 eschatological verses… let’s recap.

#10 1 Corinthians 15:52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

#16 Romans 8:19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

#26 Philippians 3:21a who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body,

#32 Hebrews 12:29 for our God is a consuming fire.

Summarizing these four verses… here is what I believe has happened to Doyle.

--First, when Christians die they sleep in the Lord.  They don’t go to heaven.  They don’t watch over our loved ones from above.  They don’t become angels.  Doyle is resting at peace with the Lord.  Doyle is asleep… that is predominate metaphor for death… sleep. Doyle is asleep.

--From that perspective, the next thing Doyle will know is he will be raised to meet Jesus in the air.

--Then, Doyle will be changed to be imperishable… his body will changed to become like Jesus’s resurrection body. He will not be carrying any more oxygen bottles.

-- Throughout the New Testament the promise is the return of Jesus. Jesus promised his followers he would return to this earth. Doyle will meet Jesus in the air to escort him back to the earth.

--Creation will be completely restored. This earth will be made new.  Creation will be put back to right.  Creation eagerly longs for that day.  The new earth will be glorious.

--Note…Those who are not transformed will be consumed in hell.  They will cease to exist.

Now, I want to add our last eschatological verse… which is #40.  We are skipping a few to do our last verse along with Doyle.

#40 Revelation 21:3 "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.”

Tree List

Let’s read in Revelation around this verse…

ESV Revelation 21:1-7 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."  And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."  And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.  The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

What a spectacular picture… a bride adorned… no tears… no more death… no pain… all new… God will be with us! That is the main message God will be with his people.  Heaven comes to earth!

God will accomplish what he set out to do from the beginning… be with his people…

--In the beginning… God created an ordered world out of the chaos to be for us.

--In the Garden he walked with us in the cool of the evening in fellowship.

--God will be able to do, what for eons, he has wanted… be with his people!

Adding #40, Revelation 21:3, Doyle will walk in the cool of the evening with his God!

This is what I believe will happen to Doyle.

--He is asleep in Christ, now, until the end.

--On that day with all the rest of us who are in Christ, Doyle will be raised and transformed.

--We will meet Jesus in the sky and escort him back to the restored earth.

--Then we will see the New Jerusalem come down to this new earth.

--We, with Doyle, will walk in the cool of evening with our God!

Picture this as we say Revelation 21:3 together…
