New Covenant 2019

The Prophets

We are getting closer. Since January we have been looking forward to diving into the New Covenant. We are getting closer. We are almost there. But not this morning. I have to do the prophets. I may not love the prophets as much as Jared, but I have to spend, at least, one sermon on the prophets. This morning, we have to stop to see… the prophets point to the New Covenant.

We have studied six major covenants, as well as quite a few other biblical covenants. Built within in each of the six major covenants is an angst for another covenant. Angst, I have never used that word in a sermon before. But there is angst. There is a longing for better. There is a feel for future. There is a wanting for something more.

The Creation Covenant; which was broken, assumes restoration. God wants this first covenant renewed. There is an angst for the Covenant Creation to be again!

The Noah Rainbow Covenant subtly implies a time when the relationship between humans and animals will be restored. Never again! There is something better on the way.

The Abrahamic Covenant promises to bless the entire earth! It’s coming!

The Moses Covenant was set up to fill an interim UNTIL another, better, covenant.

David’s House Covenant promises a permanent King on David’s throne… It points to the Son of God who is the son of God who is king of kings and Lord of lords ruling over a perfect covenant!

With all six of the previous major covenants “angsting” for a new covenant, it is not surprising, that the prophets also point toward the New Covenant!

This morning, we are going to look at four prophet passages which point to the New Covenant. The exciting thing is they all point to the same amazing difference in the New Covenant. There are many differences in the New Covenant, but these four prophets point to a rather spectacular difference!

Let’s watch for this new difference.

New Covenant Prophet Pointing Passage #1

Isaiah 59:20-21"And a Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn from transgression," declares the LORD. "And as for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD: "My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children's offspring," says the LORD, "from this time forth and forevermore."

Isaiah predicts a redeemer will come to Jerusalem. We know it’s… Jesus. Jesus is to come to Zion to redeem those who turn from their transgressions. Those who turn… My Spirit will be in their mouths forever!

This new difference is the Spirit of the LORD! The Spirit of the Lord is going to dwell within the offspring of the Redeemed from this time forth! Bam!

Let’s keep following this.

New Covenant Prophet Pointing Passage #2

Jeremiah 31:31-33"Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD.”

Jeremiah adds to Isaiah. These words will be in their hearts! The New Covenant is not a covenant written in stone. It is a covenant written in the heart. The dwelling of the Spirit in the hearts of those in the New Covenant creates a people who know the LORD!

2 Corinthians 6:16Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, "I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”

Paul in 2 Corinthians 6 quotes Jeremiah 31 and teaches us that we are the temple of the living God. We of the New Covenant have it written on their hearts! We know the LORD!

We are God’s people as He dwells within us!

Two for Two… Does #3 point to the Spirit in the New Covenant?

New Covenant Prophet Pointing Passage #3

Joel 2:28-32"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.  Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

Joel looks to a day when the Spirit shall be poured upon all who are in the New Covenant!

That day came… on the Jewish feast of the Pentecost, in 30 AD.

Acts 2:14-17But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.’”

Peter then connects Joel’s prophecy to Jesus…

Acts 2:22-24"Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know- this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.”

The death of Jesus cut the New Covenant which allows the Spirit to be poured out on all people! Those who enter the New Covenant…receive the Spirit… and old men will dream dreams!

One more prophet point to the Spirit… the coolest one.

New Covenant Prophet Pointing Passage #4

Ezekiel 37:1-6The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry.  And he said to me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" And I answered, "O Lord GOD, you know." Then he said to me, "Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.

Thus, says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD."

Here is an interesting tib bit of information… the word “breath” and the word “spirit” are the same word in Hebrew. The breath/Spirit causes life. Look what happens…

Ezekiel 37:7-14 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus, says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live." So, I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army…  And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD."

Ezekiel points to a day when the dead will be filled with the Spirit; with the breath of the LORD! The Spirit of the New Covenant gives life!

Let’s finish Ezekiel 37…

Ezekiel 37:24-27  "My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children's children shall dwell there forever, and David my servant shall be their prince forever.  I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

David’s House Covenant is going to be fulfilled when the bones are given life. When the Spirit fills them then the sanctuary will be forevermore.

Ephesians 2:17-22And Jesus came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

We who were not Jews, are brought together under the rule of David’s son to form a new temple! Those in the New Covenant form the holy temple of the Lord! A place for God to dwell with his people!

In my very first sermon on the New Covenant I made this statement!

“All God ever wanted was to be the God to a loving people.” –Tim Stidham

The New Covenant gets God what he wants. The New Covenant forms a people who are filled with the Holy Spirit. This Spirit dwells within them building them into a temple!

Next week, we will begin to explore, more fully, what this means. Next week, we, finally, get to the New Covenant.

The prophets point with angst to a New Covenant. A covenant filled with the Spirit of God!
